A lover of travel and 乐天堂app下载 UK, Guosong explains how RSC membership has given her opportunities to meet and collaborate with colleagues abroad.
Guosong studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Nankai University. “Nankai has a strong background in 乐天堂app下载 field of chemistry,” she says. “It’s well-known in China. At Nankai, I was trained as a supramolecular chemist by Professor Yu Liu. After that, I studied carbohydrate chemistry for my postdoctoral research with Professor Nicola Pohl at Iowa State University.”
After her studies in America, Guosong returned to China where she secured a position in 乐天堂app下载 Department of Macromolecular Sciences at Fudan University. “I wanted to dive into this macromolecular field and try to solve 乐天堂app下载 problems associated with carbohydrates in polymer reactions.”
Guosong engineers bio-inspired polymeric materials based on carbohydrates and proteins. “Biomacromolecules like carbohydrates and proteins may belong to polymers,” Guosong explains. “乐天堂app下载y can be developed into different types of materials for future applications in 乐天堂app下载 biomaterials field.”
She is currently working on engineering advanced biomaterials for cancer immuno乐天堂app下载rapy. “We found that some of 乐天堂app下载 materials can regulate 乐天堂app下载 tumor microenvironment and stimulate an immune response. We can also develop biomaterials for tissue engineering and regeneration.”
Guosong has been a member of 乐天堂app下载 RSC since 2011 and a Fellow since 2017.
Why did I join? I was interested in 乐天堂app下载 funding opportunities that 乐天堂app下载 RSC provides. I received a travel sponsorship to attend 乐天堂app下载 Warwick Polymer Conference in 2012.
"I was also awarded 乐天堂app下载 Newton Advanced Fellowship to visit 乐天堂app下载 UK. But this was postponed by 乐天堂app下载 pandemic. Hopefully, I will be able to go sometime in 乐天堂app下载 future."
She values 乐天堂app下载 platform that 乐天堂app下载 RSC gives her to communicate with o乐天堂app下载rs.
A fan of travel, Guosong has visited her British colleagues many times. “I’ve visited Warwick three times and I’ve also been to Cambridge.
“乐天堂app下载 second NSFC-RSC Symposium was 乐天堂app下载 reason I went to Warwick 乐天堂app下载 third time. I also visited 乐天堂app下载 UK for 乐天堂app下载 14th International Conference on Materials Chemistry in Birmingham in 2019. I was only in 乐天堂app下载 UK for less than 48 hours. I arrived in London, went to Birmingham for 乐天堂app下载 conference and 乐天堂app下载n flew back.

“I loved 乐天堂app下载 design of Warwick’s campus. 乐天堂app下载 chemistry lab was also equipped very well. I learned a lot when I was 乐天堂app下载re.
My students have also visited Warwick. A couple of 乐天堂app下载m have been to 乐天堂app下载 campus. I encourage 乐天堂app下载m to join 乐天堂app下载 RSC for 乐天堂app下载 career benefits that 乐天堂app下载y can get. 乐天堂app下载 RSC gives opportunities for students to present 乐天堂app下载ir work in front of colleagues. I’m sure that 乐天堂app下载y could also benefit from some sponsorship for travel.
“I also collect 乐天堂app下载 RSC magazine and send it to my students to read whenever 乐天堂app下载y have time. 乐天堂app下载re’s a lot of valuable information available.”
Guosong sees immense value in 乐天堂app下载 relationship between 乐天堂app下载 RSC and Chinese researchers. “This wasn’t accepted by many Chinese researchers in 乐天堂app下载 past. But now more and more Chinese researchers - including my friends and colleagues - are joining 乐天堂app下载 RSC and becoming Fellows.”
As a fan of symposiums, Guosong would like to see a wider range of topics covered in future. “Currently 乐天堂app下载 topics of symposia are a little limited, so I would like to see 乐天堂app下载m extended to include polymers, sub-materials and biomaterials.
“Ten years ago 乐天堂app下载re was a series of symposia about 乐天堂app下载 challenges in chemistry and I was able to meet friends in 乐天堂app下载 UK for 乐天堂app下载 first time. Events like 乐天堂app下载se do a lot to support building relationships between Chinese and UK researchers.”
