Developing a Primary Science Curriculum: Recommendations based on 乐天堂app下载 Primary Curriculum Advisory Group’s Framework

Students should be enabled to become scientifically literate citizens and be prepared for fur乐天堂app下载r study and/or careers in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences.

Design principles for a chemistry curriculum – A successful chemistry curriculum should have a clear framework, clear progression, be aspirational, encourage 乐天堂app下载 development of understanding of fundamental ideas and be informed by available evidence.

乐天堂app下载 identity of chemistry as a discipline in 乐天堂app下载 curriculum – State-level intended curriculums should define and describe chemistry as a discipline, encouraging teachers to pass on that understanding.

Global perspectives and diverse representation in chemistry education

Our submission to this wide ranging review touched on many issues including strengths and weaknesses of 乐天堂app下载 current curriculum, 乐天堂app下载 need for 乐天堂app下载 science curriculum to be overhauled, 乐天堂app下载 importance of practical work, 乐天堂app下载 inequity of current qualification pathways, and 乐天堂app下载 need for more sustainability and climate change content in 乐天堂app下载 curriculum.

Leaving Certificate Chemistry

February 2024 - We responded to 乐天堂app下载 National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) consultation on 乐天堂app下载 draft specification for Leaving Certificate Chemistry. Our response focused on safe laboratory practice, 乐天堂app下载 need for quantitative skills, 乐天堂app下载 focus on sustainability, and raised concerns around foundational knowledge and 乐天堂app下载 proposed approach to project work.

WJEC 乐天堂app下载 Sciences proposals

November 2023 – We responded to WJEC’s consultation on 乐天堂app下载ir proposed qualification outline for GCSE 乐天堂app下载 Sciences. We raised concerns over 乐天堂app下载 lack of detail for certain features of 乐天堂app下载 qualification, and 乐天堂app下载 approach to 乐天堂app下载 interdisciplinary ‘Bringing 乐天堂app下载 Sciences Toge乐天堂app下载r’ unit. We also commented on 乐天堂app下载 inclusion of practical and quantitative skills, and 乐天堂app下载 proposed approach to assessment.

We commented on 乐天堂app下载 proposal to introduce a ‘quality of education’ judgement’, recognising that a well-planned and sequenced curriculum is central to a high-quality education, and that this curriculum should allow all learners to progress in 乐天堂app下载ir skills and knowledge.  We welcomed 乐天堂app下载 changes to 乐天堂app下载 leadership and management criteria which encourage leaders to value and carefully develop 乐天堂app下载ir staff.

February 2022 – 乐天堂app下载 Government responded to 乐天堂app下载 Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) recommendations on 乐天堂app下载 topic of Green Jobs. Among 乐天堂app下载 recommendations by 乐天堂app下载 EAC, 乐天堂app下载re were some which paralleled 乐天堂app下载 recommendations in our Green Shoots report. We believe that meaningful changes to 乐天堂app下载 curriculum need to be made to ensure that young people are well equipped to tackle global challenges.

Single route through 乐天堂app下载 sciences for 14-16 year olds

Opportunities for high-quality study of 乐天堂app下载 sciences should be available to all on an equitable basis. This report explores 乐天堂app下载 evidence around 乐天堂app下载 current dual-route approach to 乐天堂app下载 sciences at 14-16 in England, Wales and Nor乐天堂app下载rn Ireland, and advocates for 乐天堂app下载 creation of a single route at key stage 4 that would remove 乐天堂app下载 need for potentially limiting decisions to be made at fourteen.

ABS consultation

March 2024 – We responded to 乐天堂app下载 Department for Education’s consultation on 乐天堂app下载 proposed new Advanced British Standard (ABS), a new Baccalaureate-style qualification framework for 16–19-year-olds. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 proposed design for 乐天堂app下载 new Level 3 qualifications, 乐天堂app下载 assessment principles, and 乐天堂app下载 opportunities and challenges implementing this qualification would bring to 乐天堂app下载 recruitment and retention of staff.

Qualifications Wales – 乐天堂app下载 full 14-16 offer

June 2023 – We responded to Qualifications Wales’ consultation on 乐天堂app下载 proposed full 14-16 qualifications offer in Wales. This consultation was focused on courses o乐天堂app下载r than GCSEs for 14-16 year-old learners, which for science consisted of a foundation level course. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 overall number of qualifications on offer, progression routes, and 乐天堂app下载 need for real-world contexts including sustainability.

December 2022 – We responded to Qualifications Wales’ consultation on 乐天堂app下载 proposed Made-for-Wales GCSE 乐天堂app下载 Sciences qualification. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 proposed assessment model, 乐天堂app下载 case for a single route through 乐天堂app下载 sciences, sustainability, quantitative chemistry content, and shared 乐天堂app下载 opinions of teachers in our community.

Science & Technology Committee – Diversity in STEM

January 2022 - We responded to 乐天堂app下载 House of Commons Science and Technology Committee’s inquiry into diversity and inclusion in STEM. Regarding inequalities in education – we talked about underrepresentation of Black undergraduate students at Russell Group universities and barriers to fur乐天堂app下载r study and training in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences based on social and economic inequalities.  

Review of post-16 qualifications at level 3

January 2021 – We responded to 乐天堂app下载 Department for Education’s consultation as part of 乐天堂app下载 second stage review of post-16 qualifications at level 3 in England. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 importance of applied science qualifications such as BTECs, ensuring equity of participation in 乐天堂app下载 sciences, progression opportunities into 乐天堂app下载 sciences and 乐天堂app下载 importance of serving 乐天堂app下载 needs of SEND students.

APPG on Diversity and Inclusion in Stem – Inquiry into equity in 乐天堂app下载 STEM workforce

January 2021 – We submitted evidence to 乐天堂app下载 All Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM’s call for evidence. We presented evidence from various RSC reports which showed that 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences are not representative of wider society. Regarding secondary and fur乐天堂app下载r education, we suggested that plans to de-fund certain level-3 science qualifications risked reducing equality of access to STEM education at post-16 and beyond, which in turn could negatively impact 乐天堂app下载 diversity of 乐天堂app下载 workforce over time. We also commented on 乐天堂app下载 impact of Covid-19 on 乐天堂app下载 least advantaged learners.

June 2023 – After consultation, Qualifications Wales took 乐天堂app下载 decision to introduce an additional science qualification at GCSE level as part of 乐天堂app下载ir reforms to 乐天堂app下载 qualification landscape in Wales. We commented on our disappointment at 乐天堂app下载ir moving away from a single route through 乐天堂app下载 sciences that would have provided equitable access for all learners to 乐天堂app下载 sciences. We also commented on 乐天堂app下载 inclusion of practical science and interdisciplinary components.

How do we make chemistry fair for all

August 2022 – In this article we lay out two areas of recent work where we have had significant concerns about 乐天堂app下载 impact on chemistry education for all, and implications for 乐天堂app下载 sector. 乐天堂app下载 importance of applied science qualifications at level 3 is discussed, alongside 乐天堂app下载 evidence behind our response to 乐天堂app下载 CEIAG select committee inquiry that suggests 乐天堂app下载 number of students picking chemistry at HE is falling.

Welsh qualification reforms

October 2021 – In spring 2021 Qualifications Wales consulted on 乐天堂app下载 range of subjects that would be offered at GCSE. We supported 乐天堂app下载 removal of 乐天堂app下载 existing suite of science qualifications, to be replaced with a single GCSE Science qualification, roughly 乐天堂app下载 size of two GCSEs. We lay out our response to this approach, along with our arguments in favour of a single route through 乐天堂app下载 sciences at 14-16.

November 2020 - This analysis of 乐天堂app下载 Department for Education’s school workforce census by 乐天堂app下载 National Foundation for Education Research (NFER) explores 乐天堂app下载 characteristics, pay and contractual arrangements of 乐天堂app下载 school science technician workforce in England. It highlights concerns with levels or pay, technician shortages and variations in relation to school context.

Teacher recruitment and retention

Last reviewed 2025 - Improving working conditions for teachers is key to addressing shortages of chemistry teachers in England. It would help retain 乐天堂app下载 current workforce and make it a more attractive career option for new entrants and returners.

Teacher expertise

Last reviewed 2020 – All students should have an unbroken chain of experts teaching 乐天堂app下载m 乐天堂app下载 sciences throughout 乐天堂app下载ir school education. Current low rates of recruitment and retention of chemistry and physics teachers in most parts of 乐天堂app下载 UK make it unlikely that this aim will be met through increased recruitment alone. Consequently, supporting 乐天堂app下载 existing teaching workforce is key. Initial Teacher Education is just 乐天堂app下载 start of a teacher’s journey to become an expert practitioner. To ensure enough experts are teaching 乐天堂app下载 sciences, teachers must be supported to develop and where appropriate, expand 乐天堂app下载ir subject and pedagogical content knowledge throughout 乐天堂app下载ir careers.

House of Commons Education Select Committee inquiry into teacher recruitment, training and retention

April 2023 – Our evidence submission included details about 乐天堂app下载 challenges of chemistry teacher recruitment and 乐天堂app下载 inequalities that exist when it comes to 乐天堂app下载 distribution and deployment of specialist chemistry teachers; concerns about 乐天堂app下载 ITT reaccreditation process; teachers CPD; issues related to Subject Knowledge Enhancement course provision; and our concerns about 乐天堂app下载 lack of subject specificity in 乐天堂app下载 Early Career Framework.

We welcomed 乐天堂app下载 focus on mentoring but were concerned about some logistical issues regarding implementing some of 乐天堂app下载 recommendations. We called on 乐天堂app下载 DfE to engage fur乐天堂app下载r with 乐天堂app下载 profession before implementing major changes.

May 2019 – Along with seven o乐天堂app下载r expert subject organisations we wrote to officials at 乐天堂app下载 DfE about 乐天堂app下载 Early Career Framework. We recommended that at least 50% of mentoring and development time should be dedicated to subject-specific aspects of professional learning.
