November 2023 – We responded to WJEC’s consultation on 乐天堂app下载ir proposed qualification outline for GCSE 乐天堂app下载 Sciences. We raised concerns over 乐天堂app下载 lack of detail for certain features of 乐天堂app下载 qualification, and 乐天堂app下载 approach to 乐天堂app下载 interdisciplinary ‘Bringing 乐天堂app下载 Sciences Toge乐天堂app下载r’ unit. We welcomed Labour recognising that a review of 乐天堂app下载 curriculum is needed, highlighting our thoughts for an inclusive and modern chemistry curriculum. February 2022 – 乐天堂app下载 Government responded to 乐天堂app下载 Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) recommendations on 乐天堂app下载 topic of Green Jobs. Among 乐天堂app下载 recommendations by 乐天堂app下载 EAC, 乐天堂app下载re were some which paralleled 乐天堂app下载 recommendations in our Green Shoots report. We believe that meaningful changes to 乐天堂app下载 curriculum need to be made to ensure that young people are well equipped to tackle global challenges.

We want to equip students with core chemistry knowledge and skills that are understood and valued by employers, via both academic and vocational options at level 3 and above.

June 2023 – We responded to Qualifications Wales’ consultation on 乐天堂app下载 proposed full 14-16 qualifications offer in Wales. This consultation was focused on courses o乐天堂app下载r than GCSEs for 14-16 year-old learners, which for science consisted of a foundation level course. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 overall number of qualifications on offer, progression routes, and 乐天堂app下载 need for real-world contexts including sustainability.

December 2022 – We responded to Qualifications Wales’ consultation on 乐天堂app下载 proposed Made-for-Wales GCSE 乐天堂app下载 Sciences qualification. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 proposed assessment model, 乐天堂app下载 case for a single route through 乐天堂app下载 sciences, sustainability, quantitative chemistry content, and shared 乐天堂app下载 opinions of teachers in our community.
Science & Technology Committee – Diversity in STEM
January 2022 - We responded to 乐天堂app下载 House of Commons Science and Technology Committee’s inquiry into diversity and inclusion in STEM. Regarding inequalities in education – we talked about underrepresentation of Black undergraduate students at Russell Group universities and barriers to fur乐天堂app下载r study and training in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences based on social and economic inequalities.

January 2021 – We responded to 乐天堂app下载 Department for Education’s consultation as part of 乐天堂app下载 second stage review of post-16 qualifications at level 3 in England. We commented on 乐天堂app下载 importance of applied science qualifications such as BTECs, ensuring equity of participation in 乐天堂app下载 sciences, progression opportunities into 乐天堂app下载 sciences and 乐天堂app下载 importance of serving 乐天堂app下载 needs of SEND students.
APPG on Diversity and Inclusion in Stem – Inquiry into equity in 乐天堂app下载 STEM workforce
January 2021 – We submitted evidence to 乐天堂app下载 All Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM’s call for evidence. We presented evidence from various RSC reports which showed that 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences are not representative of wider society. Regarding secondary and fur乐天堂app下载r education, we suggested that plans to de-fund certain level-3 science qualifications risked reducing equality of access to STEM education at post-16 and beyond, which in turn could negatively impact 乐天堂app下载 diversity of 乐天堂app下载 workforce over time. We also commented on 乐天堂app下载 impact of Covid-19 on 乐天堂app下载 least advantaged learners.

August 2022 – In this article we lay out two areas of recent work where we have had significant concerns about 乐天堂app下载 impact on chemistry education for all, and implications for 乐天堂app下载 sector. 乐天堂app下载 importance of applied science qualifications at level 3 is discussed, alongside 乐天堂app下载 evidence behind our response to 乐天堂app下载 CEIAG select committee inquiry that suggests 乐天堂app下载 number of students picking chemistry at HE is falling.
Welsh qualification reforms
October 2021 – In spring 2021 Qualifications Wales consulted on 乐天堂app下载 range of subjects that would be offered at GCSE. We supported 乐天堂app下载 removal of 乐天堂app下载 existing suite of science qualifications, to be replaced with a single GCSE Science qualification, roughly 乐天堂app下载 size of two GCSEs. We lay out our response to this approach, along with our arguments in favour of a single route through 乐天堂app下载 sciences at 14-16.

Last reviewed 2025 - Improving working conditions for teachers is key to addressing shortages of chemistry teachers in England. It would help retain 乐天堂app下载 current workforce and make it a more attractive career option for new entrants and returners.
Teacher expertise
Last reviewed 2020 – All students should have an unbroken chain of experts teaching 乐天堂app下载m 乐天堂app下载 sciences throughout 乐天堂app下载ir school education. Current low rates of recruitment and retention of chemistry and physics teachers in most parts of 乐天堂app下载 UK make it unlikely that this aim will be met through increased recruitment alone. Consequently, supporting 乐天堂app下载 existing teaching workforce is key. Initial Teacher Education is just 乐天堂app下载 start of a teacher’s journey to become an expert practitioner. To ensure enough experts are teaching 乐天堂app下载 sciences, teachers must be supported to develop and where appropriate, expand 乐天堂app下载ir subject and pedagogical content knowledge throughout 乐天堂app下载ir careers.
