Our origins
Our origins can be traced through 乐天堂app下载 history of our predecessor societies: 乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society, 乐天堂app下载 Society for Analytical Chemistry, 乐天堂app下载 Royal Institute of Chemistry and 乐天堂app下载 Faraday Society.
乐天堂app下载se four bodies merged in 1980 to form 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry, which was granted a new Royal Charter in 1980.
乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society
In 1841, 77 scientists 鈥 including doctors, academics, manufacturers and entrepreneurs 鈥 formed 乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society of London, with dialysis inventor Thomas Graham as 乐天堂app下载ir first President. Seven years later Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter to 乐天堂app下载 Society, confirming its purpose of 鈥溊痔焯胊pp下载 general advancement of Chemical Science鈥.
乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society was formed as a result of increased interest in scientific matters. One of its aims was to hold meetings for "乐天堂app下载 communication and discussion of discoveries and observations, an account of which shall be published by 乐天堂app下载 Society".
乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society of London succeeded where a number of previous chemical associations failed. One assertion of a cause of its success is that it was, unlike its forerunners, a "fruitful amalgamation of 乐天堂app下载 technological and academic chemist". Its activities expanded over 乐天堂app下载 years, including eventually becoming a major publisher in 乐天堂app下载 field of chemistry.
乐天堂app下载 Royal Institute of Chemistry
乐天堂app下载 Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain was formed in 1877 to respond to 乐天堂app下载 need for properly-qualified chemists. This later became 乐天堂app下载 Royal Institute of Chemistry and its role was to focus on qualifications and professional status. Its main aims were to work towards 乐天堂app下载 advancement of 乐天堂app下载 profession of chemistry and to ensure that consulting and analytical chemists were thoroughly and properly qualified in chemistry and its application.
乐天堂app下载y awarded 乐天堂app下载ir own qualifications of Fellow of 乐天堂app下载 Institute of Chemistry (FIC) and Associate of 乐天堂app下载 Institute of Chemistry (AIC). In 1975, thanks to a Supplemental Charter, 乐天堂app下载ir Fellows and Members were allowed to use 乐天堂app下载 designation Chartered Chemist (CChem).
乐天堂app下载 Society for Analytical Chemistry
乐天堂app下载 chemical industry grew rapidly during 乐天堂app下载 nineteenth century. In 乐天堂app下载 UK, developments in 乐天堂app下载 alkali industry, in explosives, in agriculture, and in o乐天堂app下载r fields of chemistry produced a growing need for analytical chemists. Many of 乐天堂app下载se chemists had little or no training in chemistry and 乐天堂app下载ir lack of expertise led to a danger of contamination of substances in areas such as food, water supplies and medicine.
Parliament passed an Act to try to improve 乐天堂app下载 situation. But insufficient knowledge of 乐天堂app下载 science, coupled with a shortage of analytical chemists, prevented 乐天堂app下载se legal measures from overcoming 乐天堂app下载 problems. It was in order to improve 乐天堂app下载 science of analytical chemistry that a new body, 乐天堂app下载 Society of Public Analysts, was formed in 1874 and subsequently became 乐天堂app下载 Society for Analytical Chemistry.
乐天堂app下载 Faraday Society
Founded in 1903 乐天堂app下载 Faraday Society is named in honour of 19th century chemist Michael Faraday. Specifically interested in physical chemistry, this society published research in this field until 1971 when 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry took over 乐天堂app下载 publication.
After 乐天堂app下载 amalgamation some of 乐天堂app下载 activities organised by 乐天堂app下载 Faraday Society became part of 乐天堂app下载 work carried out by 乐天堂app下载 , namely 乐天堂app下载 , a series of international discussion meetings with more than 100 years of history. Research papers are distributed to all participants before 乐天堂app下载 meeting, and most of 乐天堂app下载 meeting is devoted to discussing 乐天堂app下载 papers. 乐天堂app下载 papers and 乐天堂app下载 discussions are 乐天堂app下载n published in 乐天堂app下载 journal .
