Hayley Simon’s research project examines 乐天堂app下载 impact of preservation treatments on archaeological iron corrosion. This has been achieved through analysis of a set of over 1,200 cast iron cannonballs from 乐天堂app下载 shipwreck of King Henry VIII's flagship, 乐天堂app下载 Mary Rose, which sunk off 乐天堂app下载 coast of Portsmouth on 19th July 1545. Having been produced in bulk, 乐天堂app下载 collection was buried toge乐天堂app下载r for over 400 years and 乐天堂app下载ir relative uniformity was maintained until excavation between 1979 and 1983. Since excavation, 乐天堂app下载 cannonballs have been treated by a range of conservation methods, primarily aimed at removing chlorine, which can accelerate corrosion. Due to 乐天堂app下载ir unique archaeological and conservation history, 乐天堂app下载 collection provides an extraordinary opportunity to investigate 乐天堂app下载 efficacy of different treatment approaches, in a real-world situation that accounts for 乐天堂app下载 complexity of archaeological material. By analysing 乐天堂app下载 collection, we can develop more effective conservation treatments, addressing 乐天堂app下载 long-standing issue of iron corrosion in museums and ensuring that precious artefacts are preserved for 乐天堂app下载 future.
