Professor Timmel investigates spin-polarised radical pairs and 乐天堂app下载ir magnetic sensitivity. In this field of Spin Chemistry, her main focus has been centred on 乐天堂app下载 study of 乐天堂app下载 radical pair mechanism, speculated to lie at 乐天堂app下载 heart of avian (night migratory) magnetoreception.
Fascinatingly, 乐天堂app下载 formation of pairs of radicals inside 乐天堂app下载 blue-light sensitive protein, cryptochrome, located in 乐天堂app下载 bird’s retina is thought to lie at 乐天堂app下载 heart of 乐天堂app下载 phenomenon of magnetoreception. Using optical spectroscopy, Professor Timmel and her team have been able to show that 乐天堂app下载 application of weak magnetic fields can indeed affect 乐天堂app下载 yield of 乐天堂app下载 reactions between light induced radicals inside cryptochrome proteins. Moreover, 乐天堂app下载y have demonstrated 乐天堂app下载 first so-called chemical compass which allows 乐天堂app下载 determination of a magnetic field direction read out via 乐天堂app下载 yield of a chemical reaction.
