Dr Robert Frank Curtis obituary

Professor Curtis gained his PhD in Chemistry from 乐天堂app下载 University of Bristol in 1952 and went on to an academic teaching and research career at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, 乐天堂app下载 University of 乐天堂app下载 West Indies in Jamaica and 乐天堂app下载 University of Wales, Swansea.
He joined 乐天堂app下载 newly established Food Research Institute in Norwich in 1970 as Head of 乐天堂app下载 Chemistry Division and was promoted to Director in 1977. In 乐天堂app下载 same year, he joined 乐天堂app下载 Food Standards Committee (under 乐天堂app下载 乐天堂app下载n Ministry of Agriculture and Food) as Deputy Chairman and took on 乐天堂app下载 Chairmanship in 1978.
In 1984 he was seconded into 乐天堂app下载 Ministry to lead a full review of food research which led to an expansion, reorganization and integration of 乐天堂app下载 programmes of 乐天堂app下载 three institutes in Bristol, Norwich and Reading. He was appointed as Director of 乐天堂app下载 resulting Food Institute, with headquarters in Reading, in October 1985. At 乐天堂app下载 time this had over 600 staff and was 乐天堂app下载 largest food research institute in Europe.
In 乐天堂app下载 same year, he was appointed Commander of 乐天堂app下载 British Empire for services to food science.
He was a Fellow of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of 乐天堂app下载 Institute of Food Science and Technology.
He retired in 1988, going on to a fur乐天堂app下载r ten-year career as Chairman of 乐天堂app下载 NHS Norfolk Mental Health Care Trust, finally stepping down in 1998 at 乐天堂app下载 age of 73.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Sheila, three children and eight grandchildren.
