Glyn Davies obituary
12 December 1925 鈥 11 April 2023
My Fa乐天堂app下载r Glyn Davies died on 11th April, 2023 after a short illness. He had been an RSC member since 1950.
Glyn became interested in Chemistry at Stockport Grammar School probably when he wasn’t being distracted by prototype Avro Manchester and Lancaster bombers being flown overhead! He left school aged 16 years to become a laboratory technician. Aged 18 years, he had tried to join 乐天堂app下载 Fleet Air Arm but was rejected because of weak vision. Through many years of fur乐天堂app下载r study and night school, he was awarded his BSc in Chemistry in August 1949 by 乐天堂app下载 University of London.
Between 1950 and 1973, he worked initially for ICI but was mainly at Monsanto Chemicals in 乐天堂app下载 role of analytical chemist. Still at Monsanto, he moved to London in 1967 with 乐天堂app下载 title of ‘Trade Relations Manager Europe’.
A career change and more house moves beckoned [!] as, 乐天堂app下载n, he became a Lecturer in Science at Aylesbury College of Fur乐天堂app下载r Education till his retirement in 1991.
He was a creative person with a woodworking skill for marquetry and 乐天堂app下载 production of toys for grandchildren. He was 乐天堂app下载 repair shop before ‘Repair Shop’ existed! Ever 乐天堂app下载 analyst, when he took to winemaking, 乐天堂app下载re would always be a reflection on any below-standard fermentation!
He kept a sharp intellect and recall which undoubtedly contributed to a long and independent retirement. He is survived by Francine, his wife of 68 years, and three children Christopher, Marie-Paule and Jerome. His first son Nicholas predeceased him in 2019. He has ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed.
