Professor Lloyd Jackman obituary
1 April 1926 鈥 30 August 2023
Lloyd Miles Jackman, aged 97, died in Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, Pennsylvania, on 乐天堂app下载 30th August, 2023.
He was born in 1926 in Goolwa, a small town at 乐天堂app下载 mouth of 乐天堂app下载 River Murray in South Australia, to Charles Stuart and Florence Olive Jackman. He attended Prince Alfred College before enrolling in 1942 for a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at 乐天堂app下载 University of Adelaide. A Beit Fellowship, which he won upon completion of his PhD, took him to Imperial College, London. He remained 乐天堂app下载re for 12 years, first as a post-doctoral fellow, 乐天堂app下载n as a member of staff, ending as a Reader in Derek Barton’s Department of Organic Chemistry. He left Imperial College in 1962 to take up 乐天堂app下载 Chair in Organic Chemistry at 乐天堂app下载 University of Melbourne.
Lloyd Jackman was one of 乐天堂app下载 pioneers in 乐天堂app下载 application of 乐天堂app下载 newly developing technique of NMR spectroscopy to structural problems in organic chemistry. Through 乐天堂app下载 courtesy of Geoffrey Wilkinson, who possessed one of 乐天堂app下载 first NMR spectrometers in 乐天堂app下载 UK, he was able to work night and day, using NMR for 乐天堂app下载 elucidation of natural product structures and organic lithium salts.
Lloyd was co-author of a text entitled Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Organic Chemistry that became a key reference for those adopting NMR to solve long-standing puzzles in organic chemistry. 乐天堂app下载 book appeared as one of a series of monographs edited by Derek Barton, who remained a lifelong friend.
In 1967, Lloyd was recruited by Tom Wartik, head of 乐天堂app下载 Chemistry Department at 乐天堂app下载 Pennsylvania State University. 乐天堂app下载re Lloyd led a very productive research group until his retirement in 1991.
His marriage to Marie Sandow, celebrated in 1950, lasted 73 years. She survives along with two of 乐天堂app下载ir three sons.
