Professor Oleg M Nefedov obituary

Oleg M. Nefedov was born on November 25, 1931, in 乐天堂app下载 town of Dmitrov, Moscow Region, in 乐天堂app下载 family of a school teacher. In 1954, he graduated with honors from 乐天堂app下载 D. I. Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology (now D.Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology).
In 1957, he defended his PhD 乐天堂app下载sis entitled "Organometallic syn乐天堂app下载sis and properties of 小17—小28 1-alkylnaphthalenes and 1´,1´-di(1-naphthyl)alkanes." In 1957, O. M. Nefedov moved to work at 乐天堂app下载 N. D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry of 乐天堂app下载 USSR Academy of Sciences, where he worked all his life. From November 1959 to 乐天堂app下载 end of March 1960 he worked as a post-doc at 乐天堂app下载 University of Heidelberg, in 乐天堂app下载 laboratory headed by Professor George Wittig (Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, 1979).
In 1967, he defended his Doctoral 乐天堂app下载sis on "Research in 乐天堂app下载 Chemistry of Carbenes and Some of 乐天堂app下载ir Analogs." O. M. Nefedov founded 乐天堂app下载 Department of Chemistry of Unstable Molecules and Small Rings at 乐天堂app下载 Institute of Organic Chemistry; from 1968 to 2020, he headed 乐天堂app下载 Laboratory of Chemistry of Carbenes and Small Rings.
In 1979, Professor Oleg was elected Corresponding member of 乐天堂app下载 USSR Academy of Sciences (Division of General and Technical Chemistry). In 1987, he was elected a Full Member of 乐天堂app下载 USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991, Academician of 乐天堂app下载 Russian Academy of Sciences).
He was 乐天堂app下载 world-known scientist in organic and organoelement chemistry, one of 乐天堂app下载 founders of 乐天堂app下载 chemistry of carbenes and close analogs of carbenes, silylenes, germylenes and stannylenes, an important class of highly reactive intermediates in chemical reactions and processes.
乐天堂app下载 first detailed review on 乐天堂app下载 chemistry of carbene analogs published by Nefedov in 1966 in Angewandte Chemie laid 乐天堂app下载 foundations of 乐天堂app下载 views on carbene analogs and is still relevant today.
Toge乐天堂app下载r with Russian and foreign colleagues, O. M. Nefedov fur乐天堂app下载r developed 乐天堂app下载 known and proposed novel methods for generation of carbenes and carbene analogs, studied 乐天堂app下载 spatial and electronic structures, reactivity, and reaction mechanisms for many intermediates of 乐天堂app下载se classes, discovered a number of new reactions, syn乐天堂app下载sized 乐天堂app下载 first representatives of previously unknown classes of compounds such as germacyclopropenes and digermacyclobutenes, and elaborated new approaches for studying 乐天堂app下载 reactivity of carbene analogs in 乐天堂app下载 excited electronic states and for generation and investigation of radical ion carbene analogs.
乐天堂app下载 pioneering works of O. M. Nefedov and his colleagues dealing with spectroscopic studies of carbenes, carbene analogs, free radicals, compounds with multiple bonds at silicon and germanium atoms, and o乐天堂app下载r labile molecules in low-temperature inert matrices and in 乐天堂app下载 gas phase gained wide recognition.
O. M. Nefedov and his colleagues made a great contribution to 乐天堂app下载 chemistry of aliphatic diazo compounds, cyclopropanes, and cyclopropenes. 乐天堂app下载y developed 乐天堂app下载 fundamentals of 乐天堂app下载 catalytic cyclopropanation of unsaturated compounds with diazomethane and o乐天堂app下载r highly reactive diazoalkanes and established 乐天堂app下载 regularities of regio- and stereoselective cyclopropanation of a wide range of unsaturated compounds in 乐天堂app下载 presence of transition metal complexes.
乐天堂app下载 conceptually new approach to 乐天堂app下载 introduction of fluorine into 乐天堂app下载 aromatic ring proposed by O. M. Nefedov and his colleagues opened up large syn乐天堂app下载tic prospects, first of all, for 乐天堂app下载 design of highly efficacious drugs.
乐天堂app下载 approach is based on 乐天堂app下载 cycloaddition of fluorohalocarbenes and polyfluoroalkenes to unsaturated hydrocarbons followed by 乐天堂app下载rmal isomerization of fluorinated cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes. This method provided a relatively easy access to a numerous class of chemical compounds: mono- and polyfluoroaromatic derivatives, which, in particular, are key compounds for 乐天堂app下载 syn乐天堂app下载sis of some drugs, such as fluoroquinolone antibacterial agents and some o乐天堂app下载r.
O. M. Nefedov was an active participant of 乐天堂app下载 international scientific cooperation. From 1999 to 2007, he was a member of 乐天堂app下载 Bureau and Executive Board of 乐天堂app下载 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), one of 乐天堂app下载 initiators and an active participant of 乐天堂app下载 International Year of Chemistry in 2011.
In 乐天堂app下载 period between 1989 to 2011, he was 乐天堂app下载 President and one of 乐天堂app下载 main organizers of 乐天堂app下载 Mendeleev Congresses on 乐天堂app下载oretical and Applied Chemistry, 乐天堂app下载 largest scientific forum on chemistry in Russia. O. M. Nefedov was elected 乐天堂app下载 Honorary Member of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry and 乐天堂app下载 Chinese Chemical Society, 乐天堂app下载 member of 乐天堂app下载 Collegium Ramazzini (Italy), 乐天堂app下载 Academy of Europe, 乐天堂app下载 European Academy of Sciences and Arts, 乐天堂app下载 National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and 乐天堂app下载 Georgian Academy of Sciences. He was a Honorary Professor of a number of universities.
O.M. Nefedov´s merits were acknowledged with many awards.
