Dr Harold Crosbie Fielding - obituary (BSc CChem FRSC)
1933 - 2021
Harold Fielding was born in Liverpool and gained his Ph.D. from Liverpool University in 1957, after which he joined 乐天堂app下载 R&D department of ICI at Runcorn Heath where he would spend his whole career. He retired in 1991.
Harold was a member of 乐天堂app下载 RSC and joined 乐天堂app下载 RSC North West Industrial Division (NWID) committee, becoming its Chairman in 1989 succeeding David Karsa until 1991 when he was succeeded in turn by Alan James. During Harold's term of office, he was actively involved in 乐天堂app下载 RSC Sesquicentennial activities in 乐天堂app下载 NW including 乐天堂app下载 supporting of 乐天堂app下载 vital restoration of John Dalton's Papers at 乐天堂app下载 John Rylands Library at Manchester University, and also 乐天堂app下载 related John Dalton Exhibition in Manchester. It was during his Chairmanship that 乐天堂app下载 NWID launched 乐天堂app下载 North West Chemistry News (NWCN).
When in 1995 乐天堂app下载 RSC restructured away from geographic regions, and 乐天堂app下载 Speciality Chemicals Sector group was formed, 乐天堂app下载 RSC North West Trust was set up as a grant giving organisation to disperse 乐天堂app下载 accumulated surplus of 乐天堂app下载 NWID and surpluses from its legacy events of Chemistry in 乐天堂app下载 Oil Industry and ChemSource, and to continue 乐天堂app下载 NWID’s production of 乐天堂app下载 twice-yearly NWCN.
Harold was a committee member of 乐天堂app下载 RSC NW Trust throughout its 20 years before 乐天堂app下载 Trust was wound up in 2014 having dispersed its funds, which included 乐天堂app下载 highly successful Primary Science DVD. He was also a member of 乐天堂app下载 RSC Speciality Chemicals Sector Group from its formation in 1995 until he stepped down in 2001.
He was one of 乐天堂app下载 driving forces behind 乐天堂app下载 NWID's 'Contract Manufacture and Services Exhibition' and associated 'Pilot Plants' seminar started in 1985 and held every 2 years in 乐天堂app下载 Manchester area, which eventually became 乐天堂app下载 ChemSource exhibition and RSC Symposium which continues annually as part of ChemSpec Europe.
