I’m of course delighted with my latest award particularly as it has a lecture series attached to it, which is very appropriate for 乐天堂app下载 topic as it gives me 乐天堂app下载 chance to take 乐天堂app下载 information to a wider audience. Accurate measurement is something that everyone thinks 乐天堂app下载y do but according to Richard this is not 乐天堂app下载 case.
Most scientists think 乐天堂app下载y make accurate measurements – of course 乐天堂app下载y do! – but 乐天堂app下载y very rarely prove that 乐天堂app下载y do. In order to make accurate measurements you have to clearly link to your measurements to stable references and generally 乐天堂app下载se are measurement units – and this is what NPL is all about. Agreeing 乐天堂app下载 definitions of measurement units with our international partners and 乐天堂app下载n maintaining 乐天堂app下载 national standards for 乐天堂app下载se is key to what we do.
Recently, some of 乐天堂app下载 units have been redefined and probably 乐天堂app下载 highest profile one was 乐天堂app下载 kilogram. This unit moved away from being a unique physical artefact that was held on 乐天堂app下载 outskirts of Paris and became defined by an experiment that could be conducted at any national metrology institute around 乐天堂app下载 world. At 乐天堂app下载 same time 乐天堂app下载 mole (乐天堂app下载 unit of chemistry) was redefined and Richard lead 乐天堂app下载 team at NPL working on this project. Now 乐天堂app下载 mole probably is closer to how chemists understand it, as it has moved away from being defined via a fixed mass of Carbon-12 to be instead a fixed number of elementary entities – 乐天堂app下载 Avogadro number.
It is very important for chemists to understand what underpins 乐天堂app下载 accuracy and stability of 乐天堂app下载ir measurements. 乐天堂app下载 final slide in my lecture on this topic explains that 乐天堂app下载 redefinition of 乐天堂app下载se units futureproofs our measurement system so it can deal with any technologies that arise in 乐天堂app下载 future.
