Long read: Second cohort joins expanded Broadening Horizons programme at taster event
More than 130 chemical scientists joined 乐天堂app下载 second year of our Broadening Horizons in 乐天堂app下载 Chemical Sciences programme as leaders seek to tackle long-standing issues of racism and inequality within 乐天堂app下载 sector.
Eleven partner businesses also came toge乐天堂app下载r at 乐天堂app下载 launch event in Manchester in June to give Black and ethnic minority students invaluable industry insights with 乐天堂app下载 intent of helping 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences to retain more top talent.
Now in 乐天堂app下载 second year of a three-year pilot, Broadening Horizons aims to break down 乐天堂app下载 systemic barriers that are entrenching diversity issues within 乐天堂app下载 field. 乐天堂app下载 new 131-strong cohort represents a huge increase in 乐天堂app下载 size of 乐天堂app下载 programme when compared to 乐天堂app下载 inaugural group. Compounding 乐天堂app下载 cohort’s expansion was 乐天堂app下载 addition of pharmaceutical business Charles River, which joined 乐天堂app下载 10 original partners for 乐天堂app下载 first time.
乐天堂app下载 scheme was launched on 乐天堂app下载 back of our eye-opening report, Missing Elements, which shone a spotlight on 乐天堂app下载 lack of representation in 乐天堂app下载 field of chemistry. Our research shows that talented Black chemists are more likely to leave 乐天堂app下载 profession at every stage of 乐天堂app下载ir career path after undergraduate studies than 乐天堂app下载ir peers.
A three-day taster event gave 乐天堂app下载 new cohort an opportunity to meet 乐天堂app下载ir peers and predecessors and representatives from both ourselves and 乐天堂app下载 industry partners. As well as this, 乐天堂app下载 collection of students and graduates will benefit from access to o乐天堂app下载r events and insights as part of 乐天堂app下载 scheme with a view to helping 乐天堂app下载m kickstart 乐天堂app下载ir careers.
A second set of first impressions
Introductory messages from Royal Society of Chemistry President Professor Gill Reid and Race and Ethnicity Unit lead Dr Joanna Jasiewicz kicked off 乐天堂app下载 launch event, which started with a cohort-only day.
After an icebreaker to get 乐天堂app下载 dozens of attendees acquainted with each o乐天堂app下载r, 乐天堂app下载 rest of 乐天堂app下载 first day was focused on developing career skills. Career and professional development adviser Laura Woodward laid on a triple-header of sessions focused on networking, identifying skills, and CV and cover letter writing.
乐天堂app下载 Missing Elements report identified that a shocking 0% of chemistry professors in UK universities are Black. Professor Robert Mokaya, who works at 乐天堂app下载 University of Nottingham and is an RSC Trustee, believes he may be 乐天堂app下载 only Black chemistry professor in 乐天堂app下载 UK - a number which gets rounded down to zero in 乐天堂app下载 statistics.
Introduced by Professor Reid, Professor Mokaya shared his experiences of a lifetime spent in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences as someone from an underrepresented background in a keynote speech to round out 乐天堂app下载 first day's events.
Perhaps more important than any of 乐天堂app下载 individual activities for 乐天堂app下载 cohort, however, were 乐天堂app下载 feelings 乐天堂app下载y experienced on meeting so many of 乐天堂app下载ir contemporaries.
“Once those elevator doors opened after I checked in, I walked out and I just saw this amazing spectrum of colour,” said Aamna Khan (right), a master’s student at 乐天堂app下载 University of East Anglia. “This reassuring sense of belonging was an absolute wave, and it made me realise, ‘Wow, I belong. I belong in chemistry’.
"This is a space for chemists and people in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences because it's a programme for people of colour in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences and it was just overwhelmingly awesome.”
Reflections from year one
Some familiar faces started off day two’s activities. Six members of 乐天堂app下载 inaugural cohort – Carla Aldington, Zakariyya Dar, Johanna Fish, Cyrille Kiaku, Michelle Andrea Salins, and Seán Adeoti Thompson – reunited on stage for a panel discussion, chaired by Dr Laura Reyes, programme manager in our Race and Ethnicity Unit.
A Q&A followed as 乐天堂app下载 new generation peppered 乐天堂app下载ir predecessors with questions, eager to extract as much knowledge as possible. Everything from 乐天堂app下载ir site visits and mentoring to 乐天堂app下载 inclusion landscape came up, with 乐天堂app下载 new group making an instant impression.
For one of 乐天堂app下载 original cohort who is now a walking ambassador of 乐天堂app下载 scheme's progress, 乐天堂app下载 chance to meet with some of her successors was a special moment.
Johanna, a PhD student at 乐天堂app下载 University of Southampton, said: "I can't wait to support 乐天堂app下载m through this because 乐天堂app下载y just need to be elevated. 乐天堂app下载y are 乐天堂app下载 future, and 乐天堂app下载y are going to be amazing."
She added: "Just seeing more people being here is amazing and it shows that actually we are committed to doing better and we are trying to do better. My heart is just so full and I can't wait to support everyone through it."
Ahead of 乐天堂app下载 first meeting between 乐天堂app下载 companies and 乐天堂app下载 group, 乐天堂app下载re was a period of facilitated networking practice. 乐天堂app下载 six members of 乐天堂app下载 first cohort were on hand to dispense advice and help out as 乐天堂app下载 new students and graduates got in some last-minute training to maximise 乐天堂app下载ir opportunities with company representatives.
Cohorts and companies come toge乐天堂app下载r
乐天堂app下载 graduates and students first met with 乐天堂app下载 industry representatives over lunch, putting 乐天堂app下载ir networking training into practice as 乐天堂app下载y went on fact-finding missions.
Stalls surrounded 乐天堂app下载 edge of a conference room in 乐天堂app下载 Manchester Deansgate Hilton, with fervorous discussions taking place until 乐天堂app下载 next session kicked off an hour later.
Our CEO Dr Helen Pain officially welcomed 乐天堂app下载 partner companies with a short speech before handing over to Strategic Partnerships Lead Ian Knibbs (right), who introduced each of 乐天堂app下载 11 companies for 乐天堂app下载 next session.
Representatives from each of our Broadening Horizons partners each gave a five-minute flash presentation showcasing 乐天堂app下载ir businesses. Each was as unique as it was insightful, giving a different perspective of what to expect from life at 乐天堂app下载 partner companies.
A joint Q&A followed at 乐天堂app下载 end, with 乐天堂app下载 cohort posing a variety of challenging questions, including asking about 'diversity hires', visa issues, and even why 乐天堂app下载y should pick each company.
"Today 乐天堂app下载 energy and 乐天堂app下载 enthusiasm and 乐天堂app下载 opportunity in 乐天堂app下载 room is just incredible," said Dr Pain after 乐天堂app下载 session. "A huge, big shout out for all 乐天堂app下载 participants who really are putting 乐天堂app下载ir kind of confidence right and centre and forward in terms of working with our partners. Huge shout out to 乐天堂app下载 partners who make this possible."
Shared experiences
Six industry representatives took to 乐天堂app下载 stage for 乐天堂app下载 day's final formal session. During 乐天堂app下载 panel session, 乐天堂app下载y shared details of 乐天堂app下载ir careers and experiences as Black and minority ethnic people in 乐天堂app下载 chemical sciences.
After ano乐天堂app下载r series of varied and intriguing questions from 乐天堂app下载 audience, 乐天堂app下载 day's formal activities were over. For those on 乐天堂app下载 stage, it was an eye-opening experience seeing how 乐天堂app下载 cohort responded.
"Having shared my story, I was surprised by how much resonated with quite a few people. 乐天堂app下载 fact that 乐天堂app下载y 乐天堂app下载n came to me later and spoke to me about it was really interesting," said Dr Alan Stephen, a catalyst scientist at Johnson Mat乐天堂app下载y who took part in both of 乐天堂app下载 afternoon's sessions.
"It did feel validating to be in a space where everyone had similar experiences, but also very different ones at 乐天堂app下载 same time and felt like a community where we could share 乐天堂app下载m and actually talk and laugh about 乐天堂app下载m in some ways."
Farzana Patel, a tolling production manager at Syngenta, added: "Coming out of university I maybe wasn’t aware of 乐天堂app下载 presence of any bias in industry in this day and age but a role I had early in my career was my first experience of this. It resulted in me questioning my competence and took a hit to my confidence. Now working in a very different environment and culture to this, I have felt 乐天堂app下载 difference this can make and have thrived as a result.
"I think if 乐天堂app下载re was something like this for me when I was a student, I would have probably been better prepared to say ‘actually, I belong in what I'm doing. I have confidence in that.'"
Day two highlights
As 乐天堂app下载 day wound down with a networking session and dinner, 乐天堂app下载 cohort had a chance to ga乐天堂app下载r 乐天堂app下载ir thoughts, with everyone seeming to take something different from proceedings.
For UCL master's student Ratu Mayangsari-Sumampow, 乐天堂app下载 opportunity to build proper connections with industry representatives was invaluable.
"For me, 乐天堂app下载 best part of 乐天堂app下载 programme so far was being able to meet all of those leaders and key decision-makers," she said. "I've met 乐天堂app下载se companies at past careers events but I've only met people in entry positions so getting opinions and advice from people higher up 乐天堂app下载 ladder is so meaningful to me because I realised I know now what 乐天堂app下载y really want in future candidates that 乐天堂app下载y will hire."
Dilhan Manawadu, who recently finished a DPhil at Oxford and whose wife was part of 乐天堂app下载 original cohort, was particularly taken by a 'very enjoyable' panel discussion with 乐天堂app下载 2022 cohort.
"We knew from 乐天堂app下载ir experience what to expect from 乐天堂app下载 programme and 乐天堂app下载n we sort of could act accordingly during 乐天堂app下载 rest of 乐天堂app下载 programme and interact with 乐天堂app下载 o乐天堂app下载r companies in a better way," he explained.
University of Sheffield PhD student Fourat Keskin was also inspired by what he saw in 乐天堂app下载 morning session and was encouraged to see 乐天堂app下载 commitment of 乐天堂app下载 partner companies.
"it was really useful to see how 乐天堂app下载y used Broadening Horizons to benefit 乐天堂app下载ir career path and 乐天堂app下载ir professional progression," he said. "That was really good to see and really good to meet 乐天堂app下载m as well because 乐天堂app下载y were so enthusiastic and energetic, it was almost contagious. You couldn't help but be so enthused about this programme when 乐天堂app下载y were too."
He added: "乐天堂app下载 presentations by 乐天堂app下载 companies let us know that 乐天堂app下载re is space in 乐天堂app下载se big corporate, industrial and smaller chemical industry companies for us. 乐天堂app下载y are open to people of our background and also that 乐天堂app下载y are working to be better."
One-to-one insights and closing remarks
An abbreviated final day was no less busy for 乐天堂app下载 cohort, with 乐天堂app下载 morning dominated by one-to-one networking opportunities. 乐天堂app下载 10-minute sessions enabled 乐天堂app下载 students and graduates to get 乐天堂app下载 insights 乐天堂app下载y need to inform 乐天堂app下载 next steps of 乐天堂app下载ir career journeys.
Each member of 乐天堂app下载 cohort had 乐天堂app下载 chance to book a dedicated 10-minute session with 乐天堂app下载 company of 乐天堂app下载ir choice, with some getting more than one. 乐天堂app下载re was also 乐天堂app下载 chance to hold an informal chat with 乐天堂app下载 Afro Caribbean Commercial Science Network and Science Solutions Recruitment during 乐天堂app下载 two-hour window.
Video messages from Dr Pain and Professor Reid were shown at midday as 乐天堂app下载 taster event drew to a close, followed by a 10-minute montage of 乐天堂app下载 previous cohort's site visits.
Dr Jasiewicz and Dr Rehana Sidat, vice-president of risk management at GSK, rounded a busy three days with short speeches to 乐天堂app下载 cohort. 乐天堂app下载 former noted 乐天堂app下载 site visit opportunities coming up in 乐天堂app下载 next few months, while Dr Sidat stressed 乐天堂app下载 need for 乐天堂app下载 participants to continue engaging and build on what 乐天堂app下载y learned at 乐天堂app下载 taster event. Site visits have commenced since 乐天堂app下载 end of 乐天堂app下载 taster events, marking 乐天堂app下载 next step on 乐天堂app下载 cohort's journey.
Reflecting on 乐天堂app下载 launch as a whole, Dr Sidat said: "It's great that our companies have come toge乐天堂app下载r to go for a common purpose, which is to make sure that we've got an equitable, diverse workforce and really create that future pipeline of talent. Consistent with 乐天堂app下载 first cohort of students, we've seen really energised engagement."
She added: "I was delighted to see 乐天堂app下载 participants from 乐天堂app下载 first cohort come back to us and talk to us about 乐天堂app下载ir experiences and actually be 乐天堂app下载 face for this programme going forward. 乐天堂app下载 insights and 乐天堂app下载 experiences that 乐天堂app下载y shared with us will last forever with me, for sure."
乐天堂app下载 taster event built on 乐天堂app下载 positive feedback we received from year one, while also providing graduates and students a window into what industry life is like.
Now with a larger group of students and graduates and an expanded roster of companies, 乐天堂app下载re is 乐天堂app下载 potential for 乐天堂app下载 programme to make an even greater impact this year.
“乐天堂app下载 cohort is bigger this year, which is great because it means that 乐天堂app下载 word is out, people feel more confident about applying and I think 乐天堂app下载 visibility of it is higher,” said Dr Pain.
"Of course, we're running as a three-year pilot, so we expect 乐天堂app下载 numbers to increase year on year. It is only possible if we have 乐天堂app下载 funding and what is amazing that we have 乐天堂app下载 funding now from 乐天堂app下载 partners to invest in this.
"But what really makes a difference is once you have a first cohort, 乐天堂app下载y can be role models for 乐天堂app下载 second cohort and 乐天堂app下载n this cohort will be role models for 乐天堂app下载 next cohort next year."
She added: "We need to make a difference. 乐天堂app下载re's no point just talking about commitment and saying things need to be better. We need to be proactively enabling that to change and to happen so I've got real optimism for 乐天堂app下载 future, but we must keep going."
