Chemical landmark plaque honours Dorothy Hodgkin鈥檚 work
On 6 May we celebrated 乐天堂app下载 life and work of Dorothy Hodgkin by awarding a National Chemical Landmark blue plaque to 乐天堂app下载 University of Oxford鈥檚 Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory.
Looking at biochemical structures
Hodgkin remains Britain鈥檚 only female scientist to receive a Nobel Prize. She received 乐天堂app下载 accolade 鈥渇or her determinations by X-ray techniques of 乐天堂app下载 structures of important biochemical substances鈥. Amongst her most significant discoveries were 乐天堂app下载 confirmation of 乐天堂app下载 three-dimensional structures of penicillin, vitamin B12 and insulin.
Chief executive Robert Parker, spoke at 乐天堂app下载 presentation, saying that he was 鈥渄elighted to be here again, to honour and celebrate 乐天堂app下载 work of Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin.
鈥淚t has been 50 years since she received 乐天堂app下载 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and I am delighted to mark 乐天堂app下载 occasion by awarding a new plaque, one that will inspire those that read its message and demonstrate 乐天堂app下载 valuable work that takes place here at 乐天堂app下载 Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory in Oxford.鈥
Awards symposium marks 乐天堂app下载 occasion
乐天堂app下载 event formed part of 乐天堂app下载 year-long celebration of 乐天堂app下载 International Year of Crystallography in 2014. We also held an award symposium to mark 乐天堂app下载 presentation of 乐天堂app下载 plaque to 乐天堂app下载 University of Oxford.
Professors Susan Lea, Paul Raithby and Andrew Goodwin discussed 乐天堂app下载ir work in 乐天堂app下载 field of crystallography, and 乐天堂app下载 audience had a chance to hear about how 乐天堂app下载 crystallography field has changed in 乐天堂app下载 half century since Hodgkin鈥檚 Nobel Prize in 1964. Hodgkin鈥檚 biographer Georgina Ferry, who has also written a play about her life, Hidden Glory, outlined Dorothy Hodgkin鈥檚 journey to 乐天堂app下载 Nobel Prize.
