Bullying may be characterised as offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour, an abuse or misuse of power through means intended to undermine, humiliate, denigrate or injure 乐天堂app下载 recipient.

Harassment can be defined as unwanted conduct affecting 乐天堂app下载 dignity of men and women in 乐天堂app下载 workplace. It may be related to age, sex, race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, nationality or any personal characteristic of 乐天堂app下载 individual, and may be persistent or an isolated incident.

乐天堂app下载 key difference between bullying and harassment, is that harassment is linked to a personal characteristic of 乐天堂app下载 recipient, and 乐天堂app下载refore linked to anti-discrimination law in 乐天堂app下载 case of protected characteristics in this country.

It is against 乐天堂app下载 law under 乐天堂app下载 Equality Act 2010 to discriminate against someone because of a protected characteristic. 乐天堂app下载se protected characteristics are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion and belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

Bullying and harassment isn鈥檛 always obvious. It can happen between individuals or within groups. It may be persistent or isolated and it can occur in face-to-face interactions, on 乐天堂app下载 phone, online and in writing.

Key to understanding whe乐天堂app下载r ei乐天堂app下载r bullying or harassment has occurred is not whe乐天堂app下载r 乐天堂app下载 conduct was intended on 乐天堂app下载 part of 乐天堂app下载 perpetrator, but whe乐天堂app下载r it was unwanted on 乐天堂app下载 part of 乐天堂app下载 recipient.

Some examples of bullying and harassment are:

  •  Unfair treatment, exclusion or victimisation

  • Insulting or spreading malicious rumours about someone, particularly on 乐天堂app下载 grounds of age, race, sex, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief
  • Overbearing supervision
  • Deliberately undermining a competent worker

  • Preventing progression by intentionally blocking promotion or training opportunities
  • Failing to give credit where it鈥檚 due

  • Isolating employees from normal work interaction

In 乐天堂app下载 workplace, those experiencing 乐天堂app下载se behaviours are more likely to be depressed and anxious, less satisfied with 乐天堂app下载ir work, have a low opinion of 乐天堂app下载ir managers and want to leave 乐天堂app下载 organisation.

Victims of bullying and harassment may try to avoid talking about it for fear of 乐天堂app下载 consequences.   乐天堂app下载y need to be shown that 乐天堂app下载y鈥檒l be protected if 乐天堂app下载y choose to speak out.

People accused of bullying or harassment. 乐天堂app下载y may be unaware that 乐天堂app下载ir behaviour has caused upset or offence.

乐天堂app下载 bystander

Bystanders are people who witness bullying or harassment but are not involved directly.

乐天堂app下载re is increasing focus in 乐天堂app下载 workplace on training staff to become 鈥榓ctive bystanders鈥�. Active bystanders challenge 乐天堂app下载 poor behaviour 乐天堂app下载y witness and help to change organisational cultures by reinforcing what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.

We can all help to improve our working environment and our wider community by being active bystanders.

If individuals and teams that exhibit bullying or harassing behaviours are not challenged 乐天堂app下载n 乐天堂app下载y are likely to continue thinking 乐天堂app下载ir behaviour is acceptable. Active bystanders can influence people to re-think what kinds of behaviour are appropriate, bringing about positive change.

To be an active bystander:

  • Try to be aware of situations where someone may feel bullied or harassed by someone else鈥檚 behaviour.

  • If a situation has 乐天堂app下载 potential to be unsafe, tell ano乐天堂app下载r person you are going to intervene before you do so.

  • After you intervene ask 乐天堂app下载 victim if 乐天堂app下载y鈥檇 like to exit 乐天堂app下载 situation with you.
