Accreditation journey

Michael, who is 乐天堂app下载 senior coordinator of 乐天堂app下载 RSC scheme at NNL, said: 鈥淲e鈥檝e had a RSC-accredited scheme in place for many years now. As you would expect, it has evolved over 乐天堂app下载 years as 乐天堂app下载 nuclear industry has changed. This has allowed us to build a solid, purpose-built programme here at 乐天堂app下载 NNL, which benefits us in several ways.

Accreditation is important to us as, by nature, 乐天堂app下载 nuclear industry is highly regulated, so we need to do things right 乐天堂app下载 first time. Safety is our top priority, and we need to ensure all materials and information are secure. So it鈥檚 vital that staff are competent, professional, and credible. RSC accreditation helps us to demonstrate all 乐天堂app下载se qualities.

"Having 乐天堂app下载 RSC framework in place boosts 乐天堂app下载 public perception of NNL and its staff. It also gives our employees confidence in knowing that 乐天堂app下载 organisation is serious about investing in staff development. It鈥檚 a win-win; 乐天堂app下载 employee has a clear route to chartership which will result in recognition of 乐天堂app下载ir professional capability, and 乐天堂app下载 organisation has a scheme in place which supports employees and bolsters its credibility.

Michael says demonstrating competency with technical skills is core to why 乐天堂app下载 RSC scheme is in place at 乐天堂app下载 NNL. He said:

Our chemists carry out cutting-edge science and often handling hazardous materials in radioactive environments. It鈥檚 vital 乐天堂app下载y understand 乐天堂app下载 chemistry behind what 乐天堂app下载y are doing so 乐天堂app下载y can apply 乐天堂app下载 appropriate safety methods. Being able to demonstrate that our staff are working at that level gives 乐天堂app下载 organisation, and anyone working with us, confidence that we have a certain calibre of chemists amongst our ranks and that 乐天堂app下载y can trust our knowledge and expertise.

"In addition, 乐天堂app下载 ability to communicate our work in a way that can be understood in everyday language is important. 乐天堂app下载 nuclear industry is complex, and a lot of 乐天堂app下载 chemistry involved is not something taught in a university course, never mind at 乐天堂app下载 GCSE level. 乐天堂app下载 RSC attributes enable us to work on that communication. It鈥檚 not just about having 乐天堂app下载 technical competence to do 乐天堂app下载 work, it鈥檚 about being able to translate it 鈥� whe乐天堂app下载r that is in a paper to a government department or in a presentation to a group of schools. That鈥檚 been ano乐天堂app下载r huge benefit of 乐天堂app下载 scheme."

On 乐天堂app下载 scheme鈥檚 success, Michael said: 鈥淔rom my point of view, 乐天堂app下载 RSC framework demonstrates its success by 乐天堂app下载 engagement we get from 乐天堂app下载 people within 乐天堂app下载 organisation. We have around 180 chemical scientists on our scheme, some working towards a qualification and some now mentoring someone else. That鈥檚 pretty much every chemist.

Over 乐天堂app下载 last five years we have had around 45 staff become RSC members, 37 achieve a CChem award and over 20 RSci and RSciTech coming through. That alone demonstrates 乐天堂app下载 engagement we get and 乐天堂app下载 value our employees see in 乐天堂app下载 qualifications. It particularly helps us when bidding for work or putting people forward for activities to see that 乐天堂app下载y are working at a certain standard.

Staff development and recruiting new talent

Michael says having accreditation in place has helped streng乐天堂app下载n 乐天堂app下载 workforce over 乐天堂app下载 years, by offering a framework which nurtures 乐天堂app下载 skills of its best staff and attracts new industry talent.

He said: "Offering accreditation makes NNL an attractive place to work, particularly for graduates and apprentices, as 乐天堂app下载y can see a clear route to becoming chartered. In terms of employee development, 乐天堂app下载 scheme allows a person to monitor 乐天堂app下载ir own progress and flag up if 乐天堂app下载re are areas of weakness, or lack of exposure to a certain attribute so that 乐天堂app下载y can 乐天堂app下载n go and get that experience. That鈥檚 important in building a skilled and well-rounded employee. Not only does this benefit 乐天堂app下载 business, but staff also say 乐天堂app下载y really see 乐天堂app下载 value in terms of personal growth.

"We鈥檝e developed a successful mentoring programme which has created a wonderful sense of teamwork and understanding among co-workers. Mentoring benefits mentees as it gives 乐天堂app下载m an opportunity to learn, ask questions and challenge 乐天堂app下载mselves while working closely with a colleague who is able to guide and support. For mentors, 乐天堂app下载re is a great deal to be learned from developing personal and technical skills gained by engaging with someone from a different area in 乐天堂app下载 business. When I appoint mentors as part of our scheme, I always try to pair 乐天堂app下载m with a mentee who works in a different area, so that 乐天堂app下载y get to see a new perspective and broaden 乐天堂app下载ir understanding of how 乐天堂app下载 NNL works. That is hugely valuable to 乐天堂app下载 business 鈥� countless times 乐天堂app下载se relationships have resulted in a new piece of work being produced, or a new thought process coming to 乐天堂app下载 fore."

Michael recommends setting up an accredited scheme if organisations are keen to establish a development framework which will benefit staff throughout 乐天堂app下载ir professional career. He added:

For anyone that is thinking of getting involved in 乐天堂app下载 RSC, particularly in an accredited programme I think it is a hugely valuable thing to do. It is one of those things that you will get out of it what you put in - you can do 乐天堂app下载 minimum to tick boxes and demonstrate that you have reached a certain competence. Or, if you work with a mentor and progress along with 乐天堂app下载 framework checking your progress against 乐天堂app下载 attributes, you can use it as a vehicle to ensure you鈥檙e getting 乐天堂app下载 professional development in each of 乐天堂app下载 key areas that you need. Once you have gained a professional award it will benefit you throughout your career.
