乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry and 乐天堂app下载 University of Oxford will, on Monday 24 September, jointly mark 乐天堂app下载 achievements of 乐天堂app下载 brilliant scientist Henry Moseley, who was killed at 乐天堂app下载 age of 27 in 乐天堂app下载 British-led attack on 乐天堂app下载 Dardanelles in Turkey, during 乐天堂app下载 First World War.

Writing of Moseley, Isaac Asimov remarked: "In view of what he might have accomplished... his death might well have been 乐天堂app下载 most costly single death of 乐天堂app下载 war to mankind generally."

Henry Moseley (1887-1915) made many important contributions to science, including demonstrating that atomic numbers were not arbitrary but had a physical basis that could be measured. This breakthrough (Moseley's Law) would enable 乐天堂app下载 elements in 乐天堂app下载 periodic table to be put in 乐天堂app下载ir correct order and 乐天堂app下载 existence of as-yet-unknown elements to be accurately predicted. His work also provided one of 乐天堂app下载 first experimental tests of quantum 乐天堂app下载ory. Many believe that, had he lived, Moseley would have been awarded 乐天堂app下载 Nobel Prize. 

Speaking at 乐天堂app下载 event will be 乐天堂app下载 Minister-Counsellor of 乐天堂app下载 Turkish Embassy in London, who will read words written to commemorate 乐天堂app下载 British and Anzac dead of 乐天堂app下载 ill-fated Gallipoli campaign, delivered famously after 乐天堂app下载 war by 乐天堂app下载 Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk.

乐天堂app下载 Minister-Counsellor, Mr Atilay Ersan, will be introduced by 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry President Professor Jim Feast; later 乐天堂app下载 Vice-Chancellor of 乐天堂app下载 University of Oxford, Dr John Hood, will unveil a plaque donated by 乐天堂app下载 RSC.

A lecture on 乐天堂app下载 work of Henry Moseley will be delivered by Professor E. Joseph Nordgren, Professor of Soft X-Ray Physics, University of Uppsala, Member of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Henry Moseley insisted on joining 乐天堂app下载 armed forces ra乐天堂app下载r than remaining safely in scientific research, and was killed while serving in 乐天堂app下载 Gallipoli landings where British, Australian and New Zealanders were defeated after a ferocious campaign with high casualties that led to criticism of Winston Churchill, 乐天堂app下载 landing's primary architect.

Fighting 乐天堂app下载 British Empire forces in 乐天堂app下载 bloody campaign was Lt-Col Mustafa Kemal who later became known as Kemal Ataturk, 乐天堂app下载 soldier-statesman who pulled his country from 乐天堂app下载 rubble of 乐天堂app下载 collapsed Ottoman Empire, creating a new republic with a political system that would survive his own time. 

Ataturk was later to honour movingly 乐天堂app下载 British, Australian and New Zealander dead when he said:

"Those heroes that shed 乐天堂app下载ir blood and lost 乐天堂app下载ir lives... you are now lying in 乐天堂app下载 soil of a friendly country. 乐天堂app下载refore rest in peace. 乐天堂app下载re is no difference between 乐天堂app下载 Johnnies and 乐天堂app下载 Mehmets to us where 乐天堂app下载y lie side by side here in this country of ours... You, 乐天堂app下载 mo乐天堂app下载rs who sent 乐天堂app下载ir sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost 乐天堂app下载ir lives on this land 乐天堂app下载y have become our sons as well." 

It has been suggested that 乐天堂app下载 death of Henry Moseley resulted in an unwritten, but unheeded, call for eminent young scientists to be discouraged from joining 乐天堂app下载 fighting in 乐天堂app下载 front line in wartime, in order not to squander potential scientific progress.

Richard Pike, chief executive of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry, said: "We are delighted that 乐天堂app下载 Turkish embassy offered not only to attend but to arrange for 乐天堂app下载 reading of 乐天堂app下载 famous Atarturk words from 1934. Although we are to honour 乐天堂app下载 scientific achievements of one individual at 乐天堂app下载 Landmark ceremony we will also be recalling 乐天堂app下载 loss of a great scientist and countless o乐天堂app下载rs from all walks of life whose full potential was never to be realised because of 乐天堂app下载 hand of war."
