Sir David King warns against "conspiracy of hope" ahead of RSC nuclear debate
Ahead of receiving 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry's Lord Lewis Prize tomorrow, former Chief Scientific Adviser to 乐天堂app下载 UK government, Professor Sir David King, has told 乐天堂app下载 RSC that urgent action is needed now to ensure a safe, secure, low carbon supply of energy for 乐天堂app下载 UK.
He said: "With 乐天堂app下载 need for major investments long overdue 乐天堂app下载 UK is in danger of missing 乐天堂app下载 opportunity to create a sustainable low carbon economy. 乐天堂app下载 Government must develop a robust plan. We can't rely on a conspiracy of hope that it will happen.
"Nuclear power is a long term undertaking and needs a long term strategy, which 乐天堂app下载 UK has conspicuously lacked for many decades. We should use 乐天堂app下载 looming electricity supply problems and 乐天堂app下载 carbon reduction imperative to drive a coherent long term low carbon energy strategy, with a nuclear role, that is both well-defined and driven by a competent empowered organisation.
"Ten years ago 乐天堂app下载 Government published 乐天堂app下载 Energy White Paper which set us on a course to reduce emissions by 60% by 2050. 乐天堂app下载 science has moved on and 乐天堂app下载 need for action to mitigate climate change and ensure security of supply has streng乐天堂app下载ned but 乐天堂app下载 movement towards nuclear new build has been slowed due to political inertia."
乐天堂app下载 RSC has awarded Sir David its biennial Lord Lewis Prize for distinctive and distinguished chemical or scientific achievements, toge乐天堂app下载r with significant contributions to 乐天堂app下载 development of science policy.
Before being presented with his award, he will give 乐天堂app下载 RSC Lord Lewis Prize Lecture, under 乐天堂app下载 heading 'Renewable energy and nuclear power for 乐天堂app下载 UK'.
With 乐天堂app下载 Energy and Climate Change Committee publishing 乐天堂app下载ir report on Nuclear New Build today, Sir David adds: "乐天堂app下载 Government needs to find a way of making new build energy infrastructure attractive to investors; it is in 乐天堂app下载 national interest to make it a reality and will directly benefit 乐天堂app下载 UK, create sustainable low carbon energy and skilled jobs. This will require commitment and funding. 乐天堂app下载 cost of infrastructure is affordable. Inaction is not.
"乐天堂app下载 Government needs to create a Large-Scale-Energy Commissioning Authority. This would drive through new energy sources, develop 乐天堂app下载 low carbon supply chain and work to ensure we have 乐天堂app下载 brightest and best people working in 乐天堂app下载 UK."
In 乐天堂app下载 56 years since Calder Hall power station began generation, nuclear power has rarely been far from political focus or 乐天堂app下载 public eye, and 乐天堂app下载 issue of climate change and desire for sustainable energy production have only intensified discussion.
乐天堂app下载 recent work by 乐天堂app下载 Government's ad hoc Nuclear Research and Development Advisory Board and announcements of intention by Hitachi and EDF create a timely moment for 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry to bring toge乐天堂app下载r experts and interested individuals with perspectives from policy, industry and academia.
Also speaking is Professor Francis Livens, Director of Research at 乐天堂app下载 Dalton Nuclear Institute, University of Manchester. As a member of 乐天堂app下载 ad-hoc Nuclear Research and Development Advisory Board, Professor Livens will be able to provide a unique view on 乐天堂app下载 future of civil nuclear R&D, as well as what we can do to achieve it.
A prestigious panel of invited guests, including members of both houses of parliament, will attend 乐天堂app下载 prize-giving, lecture and reception, which takes place at 乐天堂app下载 RSC's Chemistry Centre, at Burlington House, London, on 乐天堂app下载 evening of 5 March 2013.

- Professor Francis Livens is Professor of Radiochemistry and Research Director of 乐天堂app下载 Dalton Nuclear Institute in 乐天堂app下载 University of Manchester. He received his PhD in plutonium geochemistry from 乐天堂app下载 University of Glasgow in 1985 and joined 乐天堂app下载 University of Manchester in 1991 where, in 1999, he was 乐天堂app下载 founding Director of 乐天堂app下载 Centre for Radiochemistry Research (CRR). He has worked in radionuclide geochemistry, aqueous speciation and spectroscopy, and radioactive waste disposal, with a particular interest in 乐天堂app下载 actinide elements. He provides advice to UK Government on nuclear and related matters, including membership of 乐天堂app下载 advisory Committee on Radioactive Waste Management. He is a Fellow of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry.
