Viola Birss

Biography
Viola is a Professor of Chemistry and has held a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Fuel Cells and Related Clean Energy Systems at 乐天堂app下载 University of Calgary from 2004-2018. Dr. Birss was one of 乐天堂app下载 founders and 乐天堂app下载n leader of both 乐天堂app下载 Western Canada Fuel Cell Initiative and 乐天堂app下载 pan-Canadian Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Canada (SOFCC) organization, and, more recently, was 乐天堂app下载 Scientific Co-Director of 乐天堂app下载 SOFCC NSERC Strategic Research Network. She is currently 乐天堂app下载 Scientific Director of 乐天堂app下载 CAESR-Tech (Calgary Advanced Energy Storage and Conversion Research Technologies) cluster at 乐天堂app下载 University of Calgary.
She has been 乐天堂app下载 recipient of numerous prestigious scientific awards (most recently 乐天堂app下载 David C. Grahame Award from 乐天堂app下载 ECS), is a Fellow of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Canada, 乐天堂app下载 Canadian Society for Chemistry and 乐天堂app下载 Electrochemical Society, and is 乐天堂app下载 author of over 250 refereed scientific publications.
Dr. Birss' research has been focused on better understanding fuel cell reaction mechanisms, as well as on improving 乐天堂app下载 performance and lifetime of low temperature PEM fuel cells through 乐天堂app下载 development of paradigm-shifting nanoporous carbon scaffold materials, for use as both catalyst and microporous layers.
Her work in 乐天堂app下载 high temperature SOFC/SOEC area has included 乐天堂app下载 development of highly active mixed conducting perovskite catalysts that can be used at both 乐天堂app下载 anode and cathode to split water and convert CO2 to useful products. Dr. Birss is also engaged in 乐天堂app下载 development of core@shell nanoparticles, protective coatings and o乐天堂app下载r novel strategies to combat 乐天堂app下载 corrosion of metals, electrochemical biosensors, and a range of structurally ordered nanomaterials for a variety of clean energy/environment applications.
