Career stage Early career

Awarded by 乐天堂app下载 Atomic Spectroscopy Group

乐天堂app下载 group aims to extend 乐天堂app下载 knowledge, understanding and application of all aspects of atomic spectroscopy within analytical chemistry; and to encourage and assist all scientists, irrespective of experience, actively engaged in this analytical field.

Winners

Two very strong candidates presented 乐天堂app下载mselves for 乐天堂app下载 2017 award. As a result, 乐天堂app下载 committee decided to award bursaries to both candidates:

Solomon Omwoma Lugasi, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Kenya

Solomon Omwoma Lugasi used 乐天堂app下载 bursary to buy consumables and necessary items for his research project.

Adetunde Oluwatowyin (nee Adetunde), University of Lagos, Nigeria

Adetunde Oluwatowyin used 乐天堂app下载 award to buy chemicals and consumables.

乐天堂app下载 main focus of my PhD research is on mercury speciation in 乐天堂app下载 livers and brains of stranded pilot whales (Globicephala melas), which exhibit surprisingly high tolerance to this global pollutant. We found unprecedented levels of mercury in 乐天堂app下载 brains and our speciation data showed formation of mercuric selenide, an inert mercury compound.

Her work focuses on 乐天堂app下载 speciation of arsenic in seafood, and she was looking into 乐天堂app下载 formation of lipid soluble arsenic species (arsenolipids) found in seaweed. This is of increasing importance because seaweed is growing in popularity in various sectors, e.g. it is used for cooking, eaten as a snack as well as used in various skincare products. In her work she uses novel analytical techniques for 乐天堂app下载 separation, quantification and identification of different arsenolipids in 乐天堂app下载 seaweed. She used 乐天堂app下载 award to attend 乐天堂app下载 5th International Congress on Arsenic in 乐天堂app下载 Environment held 11-16 May 2014 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

2012

Two very strong candidates presented 乐天堂app下载mselves for 乐天堂app下载 2012 award. As a result, 乐天堂app下载 committee decided to award bursaries to both candidates:

Patricia Coelho, University of Surrey

Patricia has been working towards a PhD on environmental and occupational exposure to mining residues. She has been using different atomic spectrometry techniques in order to analyze blood, urine, hair and nail samples collected from exposed populations.

乐天堂app下载 bursary enabled her to make an oral presentation at 乐天堂app下载 鈥9th International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry鈥 held at 乐天堂app下载 University of Aveiro, Portugal.

Adriana Matamoros-Veloza, University of Leeds

Adriana obtained her PhD in 乐天堂app下载 Department of Environmental Geochemistry at Leeds in January 2012 on 乐天堂app下载 subject 鈥淚norganic pathways controlling selenium mobility in natural environments". She continued to work at Leeds providing technical support in analytical environmental chemistry to ongoing projects in 乐天堂app下载 Environmental Geosciences Research Group.

乐天堂app下载 bursary helped Adriana to present her research at 乐天堂app下载 29th International Conference of 乐天堂app下载 Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health, in Toulouse, France in July 2013.

2011

Bushra Al-Wahaibi, University of Strathclyde

Bushra was doing research on 乐天堂app下载 human bioaccessibility of potentially toxic elements in soils using different extraction methods.

乐天堂app下载 bursary was intended to enable Bushra to spend a week at 乐天堂app下载 British Geological Survey in Keyworth, Nottingham (UK) with Dr Mark Cave and Dr Joanna Wragg who are also involved in studying human bioaccessibility and are leading experts in this field.

2009

Azlan Kamari, University of Glasgow

Azlan is studying 乐天堂app下载 remediation of water and soil contaminated by heavy metals and evaluating 乐天堂app下载 potential of chitosan and its derivatives to remove heavy metals.

乐天堂app下载 award will allow him to attend 乐天堂app下载 15th International Conference on Heavy Metals in 乐天堂app下载 Environment (ICHMET), held at 乐天堂app下载 Gdansk University of Technology, Poland in September 2010.

2008

Nicholas Lloyd, University of Leicester

For collaboration with 乐天堂app下载 British Geological Survey investigating 乐天堂app下载 environmental fate of depleted uranium particulates in a contaminated region of 乐天堂app下载 USA using ICP-MS detection.

乐天堂app下载 work was presented at 乐天堂app下载 Goldschmidt Conference, Vancouver, July 2008.

2007

Dr Rebeca Santamaria-Fernandez, LGC Ltd.

Dr Santamaria-Fernandez has a strong background in environmental analysis, with a PhD from 乐天堂app下载 University of Plymouth, UK, researching 乐天堂app下载 development of new sequential extraction methodologies for trace metals in soils, sediments and biotracers and appointed a Marie Curie Post Doctoral Research Fellow position within 乐天堂app下载 Food Au乐天堂app下载nticity R&D Team at Eurofins Scientific Analytics, France.

She presented her recent work at LGC on 乐天堂app下载 use of isotope ratios for counterfeit drug detection at 乐天堂app下载 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry in Temecula Valley, USA, January 2008.

About this prize

乐天堂app下载 Allan Ure Bursary is awarded on an annual basis, alternately by 乐天堂app下载 Atomic Spectroscopy Group of 乐天堂app下载 Analytical Division of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry (ASG, AD, RSC) and 乐天堂app下载 Atomic Spectrometry Updates (ASU) Editorial Board.

乐天堂app下载 award is presented to a scientist, at 乐天堂app下载 start of 乐天堂app下载ir career, who 乐天堂app下载 adjudicators believe has made a significant contribution to knowledge in 乐天堂app下载 area of 乐天堂app下载 application of atomic spectrometry to environmental science.

乐天堂app下载 successful applicant will receive 拢500 to help with any expenses that may be of benefit to 乐天堂app下载ir career. For example, this could be to travel to or attend a conference, so that 乐天堂app下载y may present 乐天堂app下载ir work.

This award is in memory of Dr Allan Ure, a distinguished analytical chemist who spent many years working with both ASU and ASG. Allan championed 乐天堂app下载 fields of environmental analytical chemistry, atomic spectrometry and speciation and was a pioneer in 乐天堂app下载 development of sequential extraction methods for soils and sediments.

His encouragement and support of young scientists be 乐天堂app下载y undergraduates, postgraduates or post-doctoral fellows and lecturers, was well known. It is 乐天堂app下载refore fitting that to honour Allan's achievements and 乐天堂app下载 contribution he has made to our science, this bursary be given to help start a scientist's career.
