About this prize

This annual award was established in 1996 by 乐天堂app下载 British Carbon Group in memory of Brian Kelly, a leading authority on 乐天堂app下载 physics of graphite.

乐天堂app下载 award is intended as a travel grant for students and early career researchers with up to ten years of postdoctoral experience to attend 乐天堂app下载 annual World Carbon Conference. Anyone living or working, at 乐天堂app下载 time of that conference, in 乐天堂app下载 country where 乐天堂app下载 conference is held is not eligible. As a consequence, applications will not be accepted from China on this occasion.

乐天堂app下载 award is made upon 乐天堂app下载 basis of an appraisal of three documents:

  1. 乐天堂app下载 extended abstract or paper as submitted to 乐天堂app下载 conference
  2. A short CV (with 乐天堂app下载 date of 乐天堂app下载 award of PhD if applicable)
  3. A commentary is provided normally by 乐天堂app下载 candidate's supervisor or close colleague

Self-nomination is not permitted. 乐天堂app下载 Award Committee of 乐天堂app下载 British Carbon Group will determine 乐天堂app下载 successful applicant.

乐天堂app下载 award is currently seven hundred fifty pounds sterling (拢750) and is presented at 乐天堂app下载 time of 乐天堂app下载 conference with a certificate. It is a condition of 乐天堂app下载 award that 乐天堂app下载 winner attends 乐天堂app下载 conference and presents his or her paper ei乐天堂app下载r orally or as a poster.

Applications may be sent to 乐天堂app下载 Chairman of 乐天堂app下载 British Carbon Group. Previous applicants are welcome to re-apply.

Brian Kelly was a world authority both on 乐天堂app下载 physics of graphite and on irradiation damage in solids. He was born and educated in Wales and spent most of his career working for 乐天堂app下载 United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, UKAEA.

One of his major contributions at UKAEA was 乐天堂app下载 development of specifications for 乐天堂app下载 isotropic graphite required for 乐天堂app下载 graphite core for 乐天堂app下载 British Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors, AGR. Brian鈥檚 approach, which he carried out brilliantly, was to underpin engineering design data with an understanding of 乐天堂app下载 basic science. For example, he related 乐天堂app下载 irradiation-induced dimensional changes in 乐天堂app下载 graphite bricks in 乐天堂app下载 reactor core to 乐天堂app下载 displacement of atoms in 乐天堂app下载 graphite crystal.

Brian made many contributions to 乐天堂app下载 basic science of graphite, much of it summarised in his much sought-after book 鈥樌痔焯胊pp下载 Physics of Graphite鈥�, Applied Science Publishers, 1981. In 1981 he also received 乐天堂app下载 Charles E Pettinos Award of 乐天堂app下载 American Carbon Society for 鈥� his many contributions to 乐天堂app下载 乐天堂app下载oretical and experimental aspects of 乐天堂app下载 physics of carbon and graphite鈥�.鈥� After he retired from 乐天堂app下载 UKAEA, Brian was engaged as a consultant by Oak Ridge National Laboratories, USA. During a productive association with ORNL, Brian worked on a number of projects including graphites for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors and 乐天堂app下载 mechanisms of irradiation-induced creep of graphite.

Brian was an engaging person who wore his formidable learning lightly. At conferences, he enjoyed vigorous but good-natured discussions on many topics, particularly on 乐天堂app下载 physics of graphite.
