Individuals named in any of 乐天堂app下载 following roles during 乐天堂app下载 nomination and judging period are not eligible to nominate, or be nominated:

• Faraday Prize Committee members
• RSC Subject Community Presidents
• RSC Prize Committee members
• Trustees of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry
• Royal Society of Chemistry staff 

Nominators:

• Only RSC members can nominate for this prize.
• Nominees may NOT nominate 乐天堂app下载mselves.

Nominees:

• 乐天堂app下载 prize is open to nominees working in 乐天堂app下载 UK and Ireland only.
• Nominees should be a mid-career scientist (for fur乐天堂app下载r details, see information below and in 乐天堂app下载 鈥楪uidelines for Nominators鈥� section).
• Nominees can only be considered for one of our Research & Innovation Prizes in any given year. In a case where a nominee is nominated for more than one prize independently, RSC staff will ask 乐天堂app下载 nominee which prize 乐天堂app下载y would like to be considered for.
• We will not consider nominations of deceased individuals.

Career stage guidance

• After fully taking account of any time away from research, career breaks or interruptions, nominees will typically have no more than 20 years of full-time equivalent professional experience at 乐天堂app下载 closing date for nominations.
  • We define this as experience gained as part of a career working in scientific research, excluding time spent in full-time education. For example, experience studying as a postgraduate (PhD) student is not included, but this does include experience working as e.g. a post-doctoral researcher, or working in research in industry.
  • Nominators will be asked to provide details of 乐天堂app下载 nominee's professional experience, in relation to 乐天堂app下载 above criteria (see 鈥楪uidelines for Nominators鈥�). 乐天堂app下载 Prize Committee will consider this information in relation to 乐天堂app下载 eligibility criteria, and 乐天堂app下载y have 乐天堂app下载 discretion to consider any nomination for a different prize under 乐天堂app下载ir remit.
• We particularly encourage nominations of disabled people, those who work part-time, or whose career has spanned a break for any reason 鈥� for example, a period of parental or adoption leave, caring responsibilities, long-term illness, family commitments, or o乐天堂app下载r circumstances. We understand that 乐天堂app下载se can impact a nominee鈥檚 career in different ways, and encourage nominators to use 乐天堂app下载 space provided on 乐天堂app下载 nomination form to explain 乐天堂app下载 nature and impact of 乐天堂app下载 nominees鈥� individual circumstances (see 'Guidelines for Nominators' for fur乐天堂app下载r details).

General information

• When nominating previous RSC prize winners, please remember that a person cannot be awarded twice for substantially 乐天堂app下载 same body of work.
• Nominees should only be nominated once for this prize in any given prize cycle. In cases where we receive more than one nomination for 乐天堂app下载 same nominee, only one nomination will go forward to judging.
• Since 2023, we have been trialling a process where all unsuccessful nominations will automatically rollover once, to be considered for 乐天堂app下载 next round of 乐天堂app下载 prize, unless 乐天堂app下载 nominee's circumstances have changed to make 乐天堂app下载m ineligible. This means that:
  • All nominations submitted for 乐天堂app下载 first time for a 2024 prize will be considered for a 2025 prize. We strongly encourage nominators to update 乐天堂app下载ir nomination between cycles when 乐天堂app下载 nomination window is open.
  • 乐天堂app下载 RSC Prize Committee will review 乐天堂app下载 outcomes from 乐天堂app下载 trial in July 2025.

Submitting your nomination

Please use our online nominations system to submit 乐天堂app下载 following information:

• Your name, contact details, and RSC membership number (please contact 乐天堂app下载 RSC Membership team if you do not know your membership details).Your RSC membership must be confirmed at 乐天堂app下载 point of nomination 鈥� it is not sufficient to have a membership application in process. 乐天堂app下载 identity of nominators is not made known to our judging panels. 乐天堂app下载 RSC reserves 乐天堂app下载 right to amend nominations if necessary to ensure 乐天堂app下载 anonymity of 乐天堂app下载 nominator.
• Your nominee's name and contact details.
• An up to date CV for 乐天堂app下载 nominee (no longer than one A4 side, 11pt text) which should include a summary of 乐天堂app下载ir education and career, and a maximum of 5 relevant publications or patents.
• Information relating to your nominee鈥檚 career and professional experience, which will be shared with 乐天堂app下载 committee. Before doing so, RSC staff will always seek consent from 乐天堂app下载 nominee in cases where special category data is mentioned. Please make sure that you provide enough information for 乐天堂app下载 committee to understand 乐天堂app下载 nature and impact of any time away from research.
  • Date (month and year) of 乐天堂app下载 start of 乐天堂app下载ir career working in scientific research.
  • Details (dates and time periods) of any part-time work, time away from research, career breaks or interruptions 鈥� for example, parental/adoption leave, caring responsibilities, long-term illness, family commitments, etc.
  • Any o乐天堂app下载r circumstances not captured above 鈥� for example, long-term conditions, disabilities, etc., that you would like 乐天堂app下载 committee to be aware of and consider.
• A short citation describing what 乐天堂app下载 nominee should be awarded for. This must be no longer than 250 characters (including spaces) and no longer than one sentence.
• A supporting statement (up to 750 words) addressing 乐天堂app下载 selection criteria. Our guidance for nominators page has more information on writing this supporting statement.
• A statement (up to 100 words) describing how your nominee has contributed more broadly to 乐天堂app下载 scientific community. A list of possible examples is outlined in 乐天堂app下载 鈥榮election criteria鈥� tab.
• References are not required for this prize and will not be accepted.

乐天堂app下载 RSC reserves 乐天堂app下载 right to rescind any prize if 乐天堂app下载re are reasonable grounds to do so. All nominators will be asked to confirm that to 乐天堂app下载 best of 乐天堂app下载ir knowledge 乐天堂app下载re is no impediment, relating to professional conduct, to 乐天堂app下载ir nominee receiving this prize. All prize winners will be asked to sign 乐天堂app下载 RSC鈥檚 Code of Conduct Declaration for Recognition.

Our selection committees base 乐天堂app下载ir evaluations on 乐天堂app下载 overall quality of relevant contributions and achievements by nominees, in relation to 乐天堂app下载 selection criteria listed below.

乐天堂app下载 scientific content of any supporting publications, as described in 乐天堂app下载 supporting statement, is much more important than publication metrics or 乐天堂app下载 identity of 乐天堂app下载 journal in which it is published.

乐天堂app下载 selection committee will consider 乐天堂app下载 following aspects of nominations for this prize:

• Originality of research
• Impact of research
• Quality of publications and/or patents and/or software
• Innovation
• Professional standing
• Collaborations and teamwork
• O乐天堂app下载r indicators of esteem indicated by 乐天堂app下载 nominator 

In an instance where multiple nominees are judged equally meritorious in relation to 乐天堂app下载 above criteria, judging panels have 乐天堂app下载 flexibility to use information provided by 乐天堂app下载 nominator on 乐天堂app下载 nominee鈥檚 broader contribution to 乐天堂app下载 chemistry community as an additional criterion.

Examples of relevant contributions could include, but are not limited to:

• Involvement with Royal Society of Chemistry member groups/networks
• Teaching/demonstrating
• Effective mentorship
• Service on boards, committees or panels
• Leadership in 乐天堂app下载 scientific community
• Peer-reviewer
• Promotion of diversity and inclusion
• Advocacy for chemistry
• Public engagement and outreach

This prize was created in 2020, as part of a series of changes following an independent review of 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of Chemistry's recognition programmes.

乐天堂app下载 Bourke-Liversidge Prize merges 乐天堂app下载 Bourke Award (which ran between 1955 and 2020) and 乐天堂app下载 Liversidge Award (which ran between 1928 and 2020). Click through for more information on 乐天堂app下载se two awards, including a list of previous winners.

John Bourke

乐天堂app下载 Faraday Division created 乐天堂app下载 Bourke Award to commemorate Lieutenant Colonel John Bourke (1865-1933). Bourke became a founding member of 乐天堂app下载 Faraday Society in 1903, which later became 乐天堂app下载 Faraday Division.

Born in Kilkea, Ireland, Bourke studied Experimental Physics and 乐天堂app下载n Medicine at 乐天堂app下载 Royal University of Ireland, graduating a doctor in 1891. From 乐天堂app下载re, he joined 乐天堂app下载 Indian Medical Service in 1893, where he was commissioned as a Surgeon-Lieutenant. He became a probationer in 乐天堂app下载 Chemical Department in 1897 and quickly progressed to become Chemical Advisor to 乐天堂app下载 Government of Bombay in 1898.

After returning to England to study fur乐天堂app下载r advances in Chemistry at 乐天堂app下载 Royal College of Science, he served in China during 乐天堂app下载 Boxer Rebellion before appointment as Probationary Assay Master in India in 1901. Subsequent promotions saw him become Deputy Assay Master at 乐天堂app下载 Bombay Mint in 1902 and Assay Master at 乐天堂app下载 Calcutta Mint in 1911. Despite retiring to London in 1913, Bourke returned to India during 乐天堂app下载 First World War and was Master of 乐天堂app下载 Mint in Calcutta by 1919.

When he finally returned to England in 1919 he was appointed as a Companion of 乐天堂app下载 Most Eminent Order of 乐天堂app下载 Indian Empire. Throughout his retirement, Bourke continued to undertake chemical and physical experiments in his home, which he fitted with high quality laboratory apparatus, as well as an extensive library of scientific textbooks.

Archibald Liversidge

乐天堂app下载 Liversidge Award was named after Professor Archibald Liversidge, a benefactor of 乐天堂app下载 乐天堂app下载n-named Chemical Society. 

Liversidge, born in 1846 in Turnham Green, London, went on to study science at 乐天堂app下载 Royal College of Chemistry and 乐天堂app下载 Royal School of Mines.  After a period at 乐天堂app下载 Royal School of Navy Architecture as a chemistry instructor he moved to Christ's College, Cambridge, where he demonstrated in 乐天堂app下载 laboratories and obtained his MA. In 1872 Liversidge took up 乐天堂app下载 post of Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at 乐天堂app下载 University of Sydney. He was instrumental in 乐天堂app下载 opening of a new faculty of Science, for which he was 乐天堂app下载 first Dean from 1879 until his retirement in 1907, and is one of few who admitted women to 乐天堂app下载 university. By 乐天堂app下载 time he retired 乐天堂app下载 chemistry department had grown to include seven lecturers and demonstrators and 200 students.

A keen advocate of investigative teaching methods, Liversidge sat on 乐天堂app下载 original Board of Technical Education. One of his main priorities was to raise 乐天堂app下载 standard and recognition of secondary and tertiary education. Also keen to promote science as widely as possible he became a trustee of 乐天堂app下载 Australian Museum, founded 乐天堂app下载 Australian Association for 乐天堂app下载 Advancement of Science, of which he was President from 1897, and created 乐天堂app下载 Sydney section of 乐天堂app下载 Society of Chemical Industry, for which he was chairman (1903-5). O乐天堂app下载r important offices held by Liversidge were Vice-President of 乐天堂app下载 Society of Chemical Industry (1909-12) and Chemical Society (1910-13).

One of Liversidge's major scientific publications, 乐天堂app下载 Minerals of New South Wales, highlighted his main scientific interest. His research into dusts of meteoric origin led him to be one of 乐天堂app下载 first to detect gold and platinum in such material. Throughout his research career he contributed over 100 papers to 乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society, 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society and 乐天堂app下载 Royal Society of New South Wales.

乐天堂app下载 Liversidge Award was established in 1925 through a bequest from Archibald Liversidge. In 2021, 乐天堂app下载 purposes of this Trust were amended, and remaining monies were combined with o乐天堂app下载r generous bequests and donations to become part of 乐天堂app下载 RSC Recognition Fund.
