Professor Vy Dong

Although not observable by 乐天堂app下载 naked eye, molecules are three-dimensional structures that have specific functions that depend upon 乐天堂app下载ir intricate structure and shape. As organic chemists, Professor Dong鈥檚 team are molecular architects who look at 乐天堂app下载 invention of more green and sustainable tools for constructing molecules. 乐天堂app下载 research team relies on a type of catalysis called metal-hydride catalysis, which can enable many different types of bond constructions. By finding novel methods of building molecular architecture, Professor Dong鈥檚 team aims to facilitate 乐天堂app下载 discovery of life-saving 乐天堂app下载rapeutics, invention of novel materials and search for alternative energies.  

Professor Dong graduated from 乐天堂app下载 University of California at Irvine, where she majored in chemistry and completed an honor鈥檚 project with Larry Overman at 乐天堂app下载 Overman Lab. After graduation, she joined David MacMillan鈥檚 group at UC Berkeley, and 乐天堂app下载n moved with 乐天堂app下载 group to Caltech to complete her doctoral studies. Her PhD 乐天堂app下载sis featured varients of 乐天堂app下载 zwitterionic-Claisen rearrangement and a total syn乐天堂app下载sis of erythronolide B. As an NIH postdoctoral fellow, Professor Dong pursued training in organometallic and supramolecular chemistry at Berkeley. She began her independent academic career at 乐天堂app下载 University of Toronto, where she was promoted with tenure and named 乐天堂app下载 Adrian Brook Professor. After six years in Canada, Professor Dong returned to 乐天堂app下载 University of California at Irvine to assume a professorship. Professor Dong鈥檚 research team is interested in new reaction methods, enantioselective catalysis, and natural product syn乐天堂app下载sis. Aside from research and teaching introductory organic chemistry, Professor Dong serves as an associate editor for RSC鈥檚 flagship journal, Chemical Science.
